Exploding e-cigarettes and vaping devices with lithium-ion batteries have injured hundreds of people.

An e-cigarette is a battery-powered device that converts liquid nicotine into a mist, or vapor, that the user inhales. Manufacturers say e-cigarettes do not contain all of the harmful chemicals associated with smoking tobacco cigarettes, such as carbon monoxide and tar. They also say there’s no ash, no smoky smell and no fire.

However, some of these devices are known to cause just that… a fire! If the battery overheats, whether it is inside the vape, an electronic cigarette device, or on a charging device, it is able to create a chain reaction that can cause liquid in the e-cigarette to leak and cause it to explode or ignite.

The first recorded death from an exploding e-cig happened in the U.S. in 2018. A 38-year-old man in St. Petersburg, FL, died after an e-cigarette exploded, piercing his skull and setting his room on fire. According to the New York Times, he suffered burns on roughly 80% of his body.

He was using what is called a mechanical mod, or “mech mod.” It’s a device that’s popular among e-cigarette hobbyists and experienced vapers because of how precisely it can be customized.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, a vape pen exploded in the face of a 17-year-old Nevada boy in 2018, breaking his jaw and requiring multiple surgeries to repair the damage.

The e-cigarette blast was strong enough to break bones and blow out some of his teeth.

Another young man, this one in Kentucky, suffered burns when his e-cigarette exploded in his pocket. The moment was caught on video, which you can watch by clicking on the photo above.
